Water Supply and Solid Waste Management of GIFT City Gujarat

GIFT also has a well planned water supply, sewerage and solid waste management system that are quintessential. The Water supply for GIFT comes from a host of sources such which mainly includes the Narmada Main Canal, Recycling and reuse of water and finally through rain water harvesting that is an effective way to channelize the rain water to help better the water table and also use it for constructive purposes. GIFT assures round the clock water supply through the perennial water front via three barrages that are to be constructed on river Sabarmati. Hence, GIFT will be one of its kind as a zero discharge city.

The water purification system is well designed and has a huge capacity to store drinking water required for 15 days. The water purification and supply system is also neatly planned incorporating aesthetic values. At any time, drinking water can be accessed from the taps and not just this; sufficient arrangements are to be made to support water sports activities. Another important aspect about water and solid management is the disposal system. GIFT employs Plasma Technology for waste treatment.

The method of waste collection is well segregated and through an automated waste collection system (AWS) augmented by a chute system. This ensures that there is minimal human participation in the activities of waste collection and management in total. Waste water from different areas is sucked at a high speed of 90 km/hr. Hence, there is very less possibility of waste accumulation. The Plasma converter, sludge storage and treatment plant is also well designed and compact such that space constraints are not imposed.

GIFT city gets all Environmental Clearances

Gujarat has been on the forefront among states in providing environment clearances to various infrastructure, power and development projects. Over the past three years, over 100 projects seeking diversion of forest land for widening of roads in the state have been given approvals under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980.

To initiate the ground work of GIFT, the Gujarat government has obtained various authorizations. With the acquisition of land, the government is working now on its development along the Sabarmati. All necessary clearances to provide 4-lane streets, sewage, drinking water, broadband cables for telecommunications, and electricity for the business center are already underway.

Permissions that have been obtained so far include the GUDA Master Plan, Central Civil Aviation department’s clearance, environment clearance and micro-zoning. The government has allowed the highest 3.65 FSI for GIFT, while the Central government will grant SEZ authorization. Permissions are also being sought for phase-3 associated with BRTS. The MRTS permission will be taken care of by Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board.

Given an outlay of Rs 7,000 crores envisaged for providing all the amenities, the Central government has assured Rs 1,000 crores for the city’s development over a period of three years. Eleven different types of study reports, including earth quake-proof buildings and construction of Sant Sarovar for adequate supply of water for GIFT’s unhindered development, have been undertaken.

To sum it all, the GIFT city is a maiden venture in India that beats the viewer with its views, magnificence, aesthetics, blending of cultures, facilities and vastness.
